Blacksmith is not a resort that happens to offer fishing. It is a fishing operation that happens to do everything else very well.
Every room at Blacksmith was designed with a single philosophy: that nothing should be missing, and nothing should feel like an afterthought.
Each of our rooms faces east over the Caribbean, where the only alarm clock you'll need is the sunrise painting the water in colors that don't have names yet. Inside, two queen beds and a tastefully appointed space give you every comfort of home — and then some.
From creature comforts to personal hygiene, every item has been thoughtfully provided to cover any forgotten items from home. A Turtle Box speaker is yours for the room and travels with you to the boat each morning, because good music belongs on the water too.
At Blacksmith, every detail has been thought of. Your only job is to fish.
The bar and dining room at Blacksmith are where the day's stories get told — and where the setting makes every story better.
Both levels open to the same uninterrupted ocean view that greets you at sunrise, now bathed in the warm light of evening. Pull up a stool, sink into a chair, and let the Caribbean do what it does. Our bartender is ready with whatever you're having — the bar is fully open and stocked with top-shelf spirits, and the help-yourself fridges on both levels keep cold beers and sodas always within reach. No waiting, no asking. Just pour and enjoy.
When the sun goes down, Blacksmith comes alive. Grab one of the guitars, throw a round of darts, play cornhole, or dig into the full suite of games we keep on hand. The atmosphere writes itself…
The kitchen at Blacksmith is not a lodge kitchen. It is a serious culinary operation that happens to be located in one of the most remote and beautiful corners of Mexico.
Our team brings over thirty years of collective experience to every meal — two head chefs with dedicated pastry and baking talent, working together to produce food that would be remarkable anywhere, and is extraordinary here. Every dish is built around fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with the bounty of the local sea taking center stage at nearly every meal.
The seafood that defines this coastline — prepared with the care and creativity of a kitchen that takes genuine pride in its craft — will be among the most memorable things about your time at Blacksmith.
Your trip begins the moment you land in Cancún, not when you arrive at the lodge. Our dedicated ground team meets every guest at the airport and handles everything from that point forward. You are transferred directly to your Cancún hotel, and the next morning our team collects you and transports you to the private FBO terminal, where your charter flight awaits.
Upon landing, you are met and transferred directly to the lodge — and because we have designed the arrival day with intention, you won't simply be checking in and waiting for tomorrow. By the time you've settled your gear and had a moment to take in the view, the boats are ready and the flats are calling. Your first day at Blacksmith is a fishing day.
Inquire About Availability"The permit is not a fish you convince. It is a fish you earn. Everything at Blacksmith is built around that truth."
Plan Your TripFour species. One bay. Accessible only by boat — and largely untouched.
Tucked deep into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve on Mexico's southern Yucatán Peninsula, Espíritu Santo Bay is widely regarded as the permit capital of the world — and for good reason. Its vast sand flats, river systems, turtle grass beds, and labyrinthine mangrove channels create a complete ecosystem that holds extraordinary populations of permit, bonefish, tarpon, and snook in water that sees a fraction of the pressure found anywhere else in the Caribbean.
What separates Blacksmith from every other operation on the bay is where we sit. Our location at the mouth of Espíritu Santo Bay places our guests closer to prime fishable water than anyone else — eliminating the long runs that eat into fishing time at other operations and putting you on the bow, in position, during the best light and tide windows of the day. At Blacksmith, you don't run to the fishing. You are already there.
At Blacksmith we leave nothing to chance. Our skiffs are custom built from the hull up for one purpose: permit fishing in the specific conditions of Espíritu Santo Bay. Shallow draft, stable platforms, whisper-quiet poling, and sight lines designed for spotting fish in skinny Caribbean water.
The rod quiver at Blacksmith is stocked for every angler and every situation. Serious anglers reach for our Orvis H4 and G. Loomis Asquith rods — two of the finest saltwater fly rods built. For guests newer to the salt, our Redington selection provides a forgiving, capable platform. Every rod is paired with Colton Saltwater reels loaded with Scientific Anglers Magnitude and Infinity lines — purpose-engineered for the heat, the humidity, and the demanding presentations that define flats fishing in the Yucatán.
Our custom-tied collection represents the latest and most effective patterns working in the bay right now. Our guides are in the water every day, and that intelligence flows directly into the fly boxes we put in your hands.
Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, and Snook are all species to be found in Espiritu Santo Bay. Our guide staff excels in the pursuit of Permit, but are equally adept chasing the other species.
Head Guide · Founder · Blacksmith Mexico
There are guides who know a fishery, and then there is Jorge Angulo — a man who has spent his life becoming one with it.
Jorge's story begins not on the water, but on the grounds of Playa Blanca, where he arrived as a young man to work as a gardener. It didn't take long for those around him to recognize something rare in Jorge. Within two years, he had transitioned from the garden to the flats, earning his place on the bow of a skiff as a guide on Espíritu Santo Bay.
What followed was over two decades of mastery. As head guide on one of the most coveted and protected fisheries on the planet, Jorge came to know Espíritu Santo Bay the way most people know their own neighborhoods — every flat, every tide shift, every channel, every subtle tell that a permit school was moving in the distance. He has stood on the poling platform through storms and glass-calm mornings, has watched the bay through seasons of abundance and scarcity, and has put thousands of anglers into position for the shots of their lives.
Today, Jorge brings that knowledge — all of it — to Blacksmith. He leads our guide team with the same quiet confidence and deep respect for the fishery that has defined his career. His presence on the water is felt before a word is spoken: in the way he positions the boat, the way he spots a tail at impossible distance, the way he communicates with a guest to set them up for success without ever making them feel rushed.
Jorge has personally handpicked every member of the Blacksmith guide team, selecting only those who share his standards, his ethic, and his reverence for the bay. He mentors each of them in his own footsteps — passing down not just technique, but a philosophy of guiding built over a lifetime on these waters. Because Jorge's role at Blacksmith extends beyond the panga, his presence is woven into every guide on the team, every day on the water, whether he is there in person or not.
"When you fish with any Blacksmith guide, you are fishing with Jorge's method, Jorge's eye, and Jorge's understanding of Espíritu Santo Bay."
Jorge's story is reaching a new audience when he is featured in a YETI Presents production — a testament to the kind of guide whose life is the story, not just the backdrop to one.
When you fish with Blacksmith, you fish with Jorge Angulo. There is simply no better introduction to Espíritu Santo Bay.
Fish with JorgeEvery member of our guide team was personally selected by Jorge Angulo and carries extensive time in Espíritu Santo Bay — not saltwater guiding in general, not flats fishing somewhere else, but here, on this water, chasing these fish.
What Jorge has built is not simply a team — it is a school of thought. Each guide has been mentored in Jorge's method: his approach to reading water, his patience on the platform, his ability to put a guest in the right position without ever creating pressure or panic.
They are, without qualification, considered among the finest permit guides in all of Mexico. The standard is consistent across every boat in our fleet because Jorge has made it so.
A philosophy of guiding rooted in respect for the fish, the fishery, and the angler standing on the bow. Passing down not just technique, but a way of being on the water.
